Choosing Your First Guitar: A Beginner’s Guide

Guitar, alongside piano and voice, is one of the most popular instruments people pick up to learn. So, now there’s you — standing in front of a wall full of different-looking guitars at a music store, trying to decide which one is right for you. At the end of the day, the best choice you can make is the one that makes you the happiest.

Acoustic vs. Electric

This is the first (and probably biggest) decision you need to make. Let’s break down the pros and cons of each to help you choose what’s right for your goals.

Acoustic Guitar

Pro

Convenience: It’s easy to grab an acoustic and strum your favorite songs. No other gear is needed.

Pro

Finger Strength: Thicker strings develop finger strength and calluses faster.

Con

String Tension: Thicker strings can make playing harder initially, but it gets better!

Con

Size and Bulkiness: Acoustics are bigger, which can be tough for smaller players.

Electric Guitar

Pro

Playability: The electric guitar is notoriously easier to play than the acoustic.

Pro

Versatility: You can practice silently with headphones and use fun sound-changing pedals.

Con

Cost: Amplifiers, cables, and pedals are part of the deal, and those costs add up.

Con

The Process: Sometimes it can feel like a chore getting everything set up before you start playing.

What size guitar do I need?

Whether you decide on an acoustic or electric, if the guitar you buy is uncomfortable, you’ll never play it. With acoustics, buying a large "Dreadnought" for a 10-year-old is a mistake. Make sure you play it for a couple of minutes in the store to ensure it feels comfortable.

How much should I spend?

Like anything else, there is a fine line between “too much” and “not enough.” A realistic, mid-range entry-level guitar should stay around the $200 - $400 range. Brands like Fender offer "Squier" starter kits that include everything you need for under $400.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, your first guitar is about progress. It’s about picking an instrument that you fall in love with and want to play all the time. All you need to do is find the one that feels right for you.
