Lonnie graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone NC in 1975 with a Bachelor in Trumpet performance. He continued his education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX to receive a degree in Conducting and Voice Pedagogy in 1988. Starting at age 2, Lonnie's family saw his love for music and bought him toy instruments, which started his musical journey. He grew up in a community, church, and family of Virginia mountain music makers who would gather, often playing throughout the night. In middle school, he joined the band playing trumpet, and performed throughout the community. While in band, he performed at a symposium at the Appalachian State University and attended a week long clinic, which included a lot of performances. In the years following, Lonnie began performing in churches, coffeehouses, and school assemblies, making his living performing and being a minister. Then in 1982, Lonnie discovered his passion for teaching. He was band director at a public school for two years. He now focuses on private lessons for all ages and levels. He offers classical, gospel, jazz, pop, Contemporary Christan, and many other contemporary styles.
