Mario began playing the accordion as a child, learning how to imitate sounds he heard on his own before studying privately. He continued his formal studies in France for many years. He was winner of many regional and national accordion competitions, and won the World Cup of Italy, the Grand Prix of Paris, the US National Competition and the International Accordion competition held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Mario has twice been the guest of the Chinese Minister of Culture, touring several cities in China, and performing in several symphonies. The Journal News calls Mario "one of the pre-eminent Accordion Virtuosi in the world" and the New York Times writes that he makes the instrument "sound like a gift from heaven." Mario is very active in the accordion community, and continue to perform locally and throughout the country. Mario also maintains a very active recording career. Mario has been teaching since the 1960's, teaching both the piano and chromatic button accordion, and offers many styles.
